Enugu is set to host the second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon as the countdown to the prestigious road race enters its final seven days.
The marathon, scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026, is expected to attract thousands of athletes, running enthusiasts and spectators to the Coal City, with participants competing in the 42km elite marathon and 10km fun run.
The event, supported by the Enugu State Government and organized by Nilayo Sports Management, is aimed at promoting sports, healthy living, community participation and sports tourism in the state.
Ahead of race day, organizers will host a five-day Marathon Expo from Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 28 at Michael Okpara Square.
The expo, which will run daily from 9am to 6pm, will serve as the official kit collection centre for registered participants and provide a platform for sponsors, fitness brands, health organizations and fans to engage with the marathon. Admission to the expo is free.
Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management, Mrs Yetunde Olopade, said the marathon would showcase Enugu’s resilience and growing prominence on the global sports map.
“In seven days, Enugu will show the world what resilience looks like. This marathon is not just about running 42km. It’s about running for our health, running for our community, and running to put Enugu on the global sports map. We are ready to welcome the world,” she said.
The organizers will also hold the Enugu City International Marathon World Press Conference on Thursday, August 28, where final details of the race, including security arrangements, logistics and the prize structure for the 42km and 10km categories, will be unveiled.
On race day, the 42km elite marathon will be flagged off at 6:30am from ShopRite on Abakaliki Road, while the 10km fun run will begin at 8:30am from Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road and finish at Michael Okpara Square.
With preparations entering the final stretch, organizers said Enugu is ready to welcome athletes and visitors from across Nigeria and beyond for the second edition of the international marathon.
