The Nigerian Navy has bolstered its maritime security capabilities with the official induction of the Security Support Vessel (SSV) KALI 3 at Asemoku Jetty, Delta State. This milestone event, held on 18 August 2026, marks a significant step in enhancing the protection of Nigeria’s critical energy infrastructure and maritime interests.

The induction ceremony was led by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and attended by prominent dignitaries including the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, represented by Deputy Governor Chief (Sir) Monday John Onyeme, FCA. Also present were senior military officers, government officials, traditional rulers, maritime stakeholders, and private sector representatives.

SSV KALI 3 is the first of ten Security Support Vessels being provided by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) under a Memorandum of Agreement with the Nigerian Navy. This collaboration exemplifies a strategic public-private partnership designed to convert private-sector investment into enhanced maritime security capabilities.

A notable highlight of the vessel is its indigenous design and construction at the Okpai HM Shipyard in Delta State, developed in close cooperation with the Nigerian Navy. This achievement underscores the growing role of Nigeria’s domestic shipbuilding industry in advancing national security and economic development.

In his address, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas emphasized the critical importance of protecting Nigeria’s maritime environment and energy assets to sustain economic activities, particularly within the oil and gas sector. He praised SEEPCO for its dedication to the initiative and called on other maritime stakeholders to support similar partnerships that strengthen national security.

The SSV KALI 3 is equipped to perform a range of vital functions including coastal and offshore security, interdiction, anti-piracy operations, maritime law enforcement, and escort duties. Its design is tailored to meet the challenges posed by Nigeria’s complex coastal and shallow-water environments.

Vice Admiral Abbas also charged the vessel’s crew to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, integrity, and operational readiness. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to fostering partnerships that enhance maritime security across the nation.

The induction of KALI 3, as the first vessel in the 10-vessel agreement, represents a significant convergence of maritime security efforts, indigenous shipbuilding expertise, and private-sector investment, all aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s strategic economic interests.
