The African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU), Abuja, has matriculated 127 students during its third matriculation ceremony, reaffirming its ambition to become Africa’s leading institution for aviation and aerospace education.

Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Mustapha Abdullahi, described the event as another significant milestone in the university’s growth, noting that AAAU is steadily evolving from a bold vision into an emerging centre of excellence for aviation and aerospace training on the continent.

Abdullahi recalled the university’s journey since its establishment, saying he had witnessed its development from inception as the institution’s first employee. He explained that AAAU was established by the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to address the shortage of skilled manpower in Nigeria’s aviation sector and across Africa.

“Many people saw only an idea. Some wondered whether it would ever become a reality. Today, this hall provides the answer,” he said.

The acting vice-chancellor commended the pioneer staff and students for believing in the vision of the university, describing them as the foundation upon which its future is being built.

He disclosed that the university commenced undergraduate academic activities in 2023 with just 29 students but has since grown to a student population of 311. He added that the 2026 matriculation comprised 52 undergraduate and 75 postgraduate students.

Abdullahi further revealed that more than 50 postgraduate students had successfully defended their master’s degree projects, while the institution had trained over 500 aviation professionals through its Professional Training Directorate, compared to 162 trainees at inception.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to producing highly skilled professionals, innovative researchers and responsible leaders capable of advancing Africa’s aviation and aerospace industry.

Addressing the newly admitted students, Abdullahi stressed that excellence is indispensable in the aviation profession, warning against examination malpractice, absenteeism and academic shortcuts.

“There is absolutely no room for mediocrity in aviation. If you came here looking for shortcuts, you came to the wrong university,” he said, urging the students to embrace discipline, innovation and hard work.

Also speaking, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to developing AAAU into Africa’s premier aviation and aerospace university.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mahmud Adam Kambari, the minister described the institution as a strategic investment aimed at addressing Africa’s shortage of skilled aviation professionals in line with the Federal Government’s human capital development agenda.

He noted that global projections indicate a demand for more than 600,000 pilots, over 700,000 aircraft maintenance engineers and technicians, as well as hundreds of thousands of other aviation professionals in the coming decades, with Africa expected to record one of the fastest-growing passenger traffic markets.

According to the minister, AAAU has a critical role in producing graduates who will emerge as innovators, researchers, regulators, entrepreneurs and global leaders within the aviation ecosystem.

He commended the university’s management for its resilience in overcoming the challenges associated with establishing a new institution and urged it to broaden its academic offerings while remaining faithful to its specialized mandate.

The minister recommended the introduction of programmes in aircraft engineering, aviation management, airport operations, aerospace engineering, unmanned aircraft systems, aviation law, aviation finance, aviation medicine, logistics and supply chain management, meteorology and other aviation-related disciplines.

He, however, cautioned against transforming the institution into a conventional university.

“We have seen situations where specialized universities gradually abandoned their mandates and introduced programmes that barely reflected their core purpose. That will not happen here,” he said.

“AAAU was created as a specialized aviation and aerospace university, and as far as this administration is concerned, that is exactly what it shall remain.”
