The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the successful release of six Nigerian nationals who had been detained in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, four of the detained Nigerians were released on June 22, 2026, while the remaining two regained their freedom on June 23, 2026, following sustained diplomatic and consular interventions by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan.
The Ministry said it received official confirmation of the releases from the Embassy of Nigeria in Côte d’Ivoire, noting that the outcome was the result of continuous engagement with relevant Ivorian authorities.
The Ministry commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, and the staff of the Embassy for their professionalism, dedication and relentless diplomatic efforts that led to the resolution of the matter.
According to the statement, the Embassy maintained regular consular access to the detainees throughout their period of detention, ensured their welfare, and engaged consistently with the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and other relevant institutions to secure their release.
The Ministry also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation and support in resolving the issue, describing the development as a reflection of the strong bilateral relations between both countries.
“The cordial relations between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, founded on mutual respect, friendship and regional solidarity, greatly facilitated the positive outcome,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of Nigerians abroad, the Federal Government said it would continue to provide consular assistance through its diplomatic missions and engage host governments through established diplomatic channels to safeguard the interests of Nigerian citizens worldwide.
The Ministry further reassured Nigerians living and working overseas that their welfare and protection remain a key priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy. It also urged citizens abroad to respect the laws of their host countries and maintain contact with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic or consular mission for support and coordination when necessary.
