The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the challenges confronting the nation as Nigeria marks its 27th Democracy Day celebration.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known in a statement issued on Friday following a special Juma’at prayer held as part of activities commemorating Democracy Day on June 12, 2026.
According to the minister, the prayer service provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s progress and renew their commitment to peace, unity and national development.
He noted that Nigeria’s growth, stability and unity require not only effective governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of citizens.
Idris paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose sacrifices, courage and dedication to the will of the people, he said, remain enduring symbols of the nation’s democratic journey.
The minister described Democracy Day as an occasion to celebrate the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the collective commitment of citizens to constitutional rule.
“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance testify to the resilience of our democracy and the determination of our people to uphold democratic values,” he stated.
He added that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government remains focused on consolidating democratic gains, fostering national cohesion and tackling the challenges facing the country.
Idris urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship, stressing that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity.
He called on citizens to reject division, embrace dialogue and uphold values that strengthen democracy and promote national cohesion.
“Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria for present and future generations,” he said.
The minister also prayed for God’s continued blessings on Nigeria, guidance for the nation’s leaders, protection for security personnel and enduring peace, unity and prosperity across the country.
