Abuja-The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has conditionally suspended the ongoing strike action which has lasted for over a month.
You would recall that lecturers in Nigerian public universities declared a total, indefinite strike on Sunday, August 13,2017.
The ASUU President, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi who made ASUU’s position known to pressmen in Abuja on Monday night after a meeting with the Federal Government, said that the suspension has a life span of October 31, 2017.
He said; “After an elaborate and a sensitive consultation process, the National Executive Council of ASUU has agreed to conditionally suspend the ongoing strike action, taking into cognizance that the latest proposal from the government to address the contending issues in the strike action has a deadline of the end of October 2017”.
He further announced that all members of ASUU are however expected to resume work tomorrow, September 19, 2017 after their branch congresses.
While clarifying on the issues in dispute, he noted that, “The current strike has been necessitated by the non implementation of the 2009 agreement, 2013 MoU and the 2016 resolutions reached under the auspices of the National Assembly.
“With the commencement of our action on 12th August 2017, we have held series of meetings and deliberations with the government and arrived at a number of resolutions and these are now captured in a Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed today 18th September 2017″he added.
Ogunyemi stressed that ASUU will not hesitate to review its position should government renege on its signed Memorandum of Action, adding that ASUU will not relent in confronting all human and artificial barriers to a transformed university education for the betterment of Nigeria and Nigerians.
He further thanked Nigerians, students and parents for their understanding of the concerted efforts of ASUU for a good educational system, adding that ASUU will not rest until Nigerian universities becomes more enviable.
