The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for its aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.

The achievement followed a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain the upward movement of Nigeria’s rating by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

NiMet said the three airports successfully met the requirements of its Quality Management System (QMS) after a rigorous third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc., Canada, from July 20 to 23, 2026.

The audit assessed NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services provided to airlines and other aviation stakeholders at the affected airports and found them to be in conformity with the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

The agency also disclosed that it had been successfully recertified to the ISO 9001:2015 standard at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

With the latest certification, NiMet now has ISO 9001:2015 certification covering aeronautical meteorological services at eight Nigerian international airports.

The certification is valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits scheduled until the next recertification exercise in 2029.

In a letter dated July 26, 2026, to the NiMet Director-General, the lead auditor and director at Certech, Frank Strohmeier, said the audit objectives were achieved, with the assessment focusing on risks and objectives in line with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.

The third-party audit consequently resulted in the issuance of a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s quality management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.

The agency described the achievement as particularly significant because it was the first time its aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports had undergone ISO 9001:2015 certification audits.

Speaking on the development, Anosike commended the agency’s Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, for its efforts in securing the certification.

“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat. We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he said.
