The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in meteorology, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI)-driven early warning systems and climate services.

The commitment was made during a bilateral meeting between the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the Administrator and Director-General of the CMA, Dr. Chen Zhenlin, China’s Permanent Representative to the WMO.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the WMO Executive Council, where both leaders reviewed their long-standing partnership and explored new opportunities for collaboration.

A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to advance cooperation through the adoption and customization of the MAZU AI Early Warning Platform for Nigeria. The initiative is expected to enhance weather forecasting, disaster preparedness, and climate services by leveraging emerging artificial intelligence technologies.

Both parties also agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering a wide range of areas, including the MAZU platform, staff exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, data sharing, remote sensing, aviation meteorology research, knowledge exchange, and scholarship opportunities.

According to the two agencies, the proposed collaboration is aimed at strengthening meteorological capabilities and delivering mutual socio-economic benefits to Nigeria and China through improved weather and climate services.
