Nigeria has emerged as the best African nation at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, finishing third overall with 24 medals.

Team Nigeria won one gold, five silver and 18 bronze medals at the six-day championship, which featured athletes from 20 Commonwealth countries. India finished ahead of Nigeria on the overall standings.

The historic performance was highlighted by 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson, who became the first Nigerian to win an international gold medal in fencing.

His landmark achievement has earned him recognition from the National Sports Commission (NSC), which has placed him in Elite Category A of its Olympic Grants Programme. Under the scheme, Osievwa-Thompson will receive a quarterly training grant of $10,000 to support his preparations for the Olympic Games.

Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, said the championship demonstrated that Nigeria had the potential to excel in sports beyond football.

According to him, the performances in Lagos underscored the need for greater investment and recognition for emerging and non-traditional sports.

“This has shown us that beyond football, there are other sports that Nigeria is not just organizing but also winning and excelling in. We must give respect and credence to those sports,” Olopade said.

The National Sports Commission also rewarded Nigeria’s medal-winning athletes for their performances, while the Nigerian wheelchair fencing team received a special $10,000 reward for its outstanding showing at the championship.

President of the Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, expressed satisfaction with Nigeria’s successful hosting of the competition, noting that preparations had lasted more than a year.

“We planned and prepared for over a year and we’re very happy to have hosted excellently. It’s a complex competition to host and there were concerns, but we addressed it all, one at a time,” Samuel said.

The successful championship further demonstrated Nigeria’s growing capacity to host major international sporting events while providing local athletes with an opportunity to compete against some of the best fencers in the Commonwealth.

For Nigerian fencing, the combination of a historic international gold medal, five silver medals and 18 bronze medals represents a major step forward for the sport.

The NSC’s expanded performance-based support, particularly its decision to provide targeted funding for athletes with Olympic potential, is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s fencing programme and nurture more athletes capable of delivering international success.
