The National Sports Commission (NSC), in partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has inaugurated a seven-member Welfare Committee to support the Super Falcons as they prepare to defend their title at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The committee was constituted following a meeting between the Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, and the General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, in Abuja on Wednesday.

NFF Executive Board member Aisha Falode will chair the committee, while Ruth David will serve as secretary. Other members include Rt. Hon. Margaret Icheen, Babagana Kalli, Emeka Iyama, Aderonke Tinuoye, and Tobechukwu Oluchi.

Speaking on the initiative, Olopade said the Federal Government is committed to ensuring a smooth and successful campaign for the nine-time African champions, free from any welfare or financial distractions.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu have shown strong interest in the team’s success and are committed to supporting the Super Falcons throughout the tournament.

“This ad-hoc committee was established to complement the efforts of the NFF and ensure a seamless campaign for the team in Morocco,” Olopade said.

He stressed that player welfare remains a critical factor in achieving success at major competitions.

“Welfare is a non-negotiable aspect of any team’s performance. With this committee in place, the players can be assured that both the NSC and NFF are taking their welfare seriously throughout the WAFCON campaign,” he added.

On his part, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi described the development as a landmark step for women’s football in Nigeria.

He noted that it is the first time such a welfare committee has been established for the senior women’s national team ahead of a major international tournament.

“For us at the NFF, this reflects the level of commitment the NSC is showing towards women’s football. It will further accelerate the growth of the women’s game in Nigeria,” Sanusi said.

He clarified that the committee is not intended to replace existing structures within the team but to provide additional support that will ensure a hitch-free participation at the championship.

“We believe this committee is not going to the WAFCON to take over anyone’s responsibilities but to ensure that we have a seamless and successful campaign,” he added.

The Super Falcons will head to Morocco aiming to retain their continental crown and further extend their dominance in African women’s football.
