President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to rewarding outstanding performances by Nigerian athletes has come to life as Team Nigeria’s medallists at the ongoing Commonwealth Games received immediate cash rewards following their successes in para powerlifting.
Commonwealth champion Esther Nworgu, who won the gold medal in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, received a total reward of $10,000, comprising an instant $5,000 cash award from the National Sports Commission (NSC) at the competition venue and another $5,000 paid directly into her account.
Silver medallist Roland Ezuruike, who competed in the men’s lightweight para powerlifting (Group A), was rewarded with a total of $5,000. He received $2,000 instantly from the NSC, while an additional $3,000 was transferred directly to his account.
Similarly, Esther Onyema, who claimed silver in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, received a total of $5,000, comprising an immediate $2,000 cash reward at the competition venue and $3,000 paid directly into her account.
The prompt disbursement of the rewards underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to motivate Nigerian athletes and recognize excellence on the international stage.
The incentives come as Team Nigeria continues its campaign at the Commonwealth Games, with the early medals providing a strong boost to the country’s quest for more podium finishes. President Tinubu’s reward initiative is expected to further inspire the athletes as they strive to make history for Nigeria.
