All eyes turned to Ikenne on Monday as Sporting Lagos and Ranchers locked horns in what was a fast-paced and fiercely contested opener at the Remo Stars Stadium.
The Conference B champions, Sporting Lagos, arrived brimming with confidence after a resilient campaign that sealed their promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Known for their attacking flair and vocal fanbase, the “Noisy Lagosians” were expected to make an early statement in the title-deciding mini-tournament.
Much of that ambition will rested on the shoulders of talismanic forward Aliyu Baba, who delivered an impressive return of seven goals and 11 assists during the regular season. Supported by the attacking duo of Alex Leme and Shola Oladunjoye, Sporting Lagos boast the creativity and firepower to trouble any defence.
“Our target is clear — we want to win the NNL title,” Baba affirmed ahead of the encounter, echoing the confidence within the squad.
Captain Solomon Uloko also struck a determined tone, highlighting the winning mentality instilled across the team, from the coaching crew to the playing unit.
Under the guidance of Coach Jeffrey Buter, who stepped up from an assistant role this season, Sporting Lagos have shown consistency and attacking intent — typified by their emphatic 5-1 victory over Stormers SC during the campaign.
Standing in their way, however, are Conference D winners Ranchers, whose resurgence has been one of the standout stories of the season. The Kaduna-based side, reborn and re-energised, have rekindled memories of their historic past and are now chasing a new chapter of glory.
The encounter presented more than just a football match — it is a symbolic North-versus-South showdown that could set the tone for the rest of the Super Four.
Coach Ejoh Ahmad will be banking on discipline and tactical sharpness to unsettle their more fancied opponents, while captain Daniel Johnson leads a side determined to cap their fairytale run with silverware.
With pride, momentum, and the NNL title at stake, Monday’s opener delivered intensity, and drama.
