The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has commended Nigeria’s U18 and U20 male handball teams following their outstanding performance at the IHF Trophy Zone 3 tournament held in Lomé, Togo.
Olopade gave the commendation on Monday while receiving the victorious teams at his office in Abuja, noting that their achievement has boosted confidence in the potential of Nigeria’s male athletes on the international stage.
He described the teams’ dominance in Togo as a strong indication of the steady growth of handball in the country, stressing that the sport deserves increased investment and support from both government and private stakeholders.
According to him, the recent success of the male teams provides a refreshing balance to the consistent achievements recorded by Nigeria’s female athletes globally. He added that with sustained support and development, Nigerian handball teams can challenge and overcome the long-standing dominance of North African countries in the sport.
The NSC boss also praised the leadership of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, under its President, Jibril Saidu, for demonstrating commitment and passion toward the development of the game.
Olopade further assured the federation of the Commission’s full backing as preparations intensify for upcoming continental competitions later in the year.
In his response, President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Jibril Saidu, expressed appreciation to the NSC for its support, noting that the renewed attention has motivated the federation and players. He reaffirmed the team’s determination to build on their recent success and aim for victory at the continental tournament.
