The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mrs. Stella Okoh Esene, former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter.

Mrs. Esene passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a prolonged illness. She was 64 years old.

Born in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, Mrs. Esene served meritoriously in the Federal Ministry of Information before retiring and joining True Verdict Online Newspaper, where she continued to practice journalism with passion and dedication.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the Council conveyed its heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, and members of NAWOJ.

The statement described the late Esene as “a dedicated and passionate media professional whose contributions to the advancement of women journalists and promotion of ethical journalism will be remembered for years to come.”

“The NUJ FCT Council is deeply pained by this loss. She was a pillar of strength and inspiration to many journalists, particularly the younger generation. Her leadership, courage, and unwavering commitment to truth, fairness, and professional ethics remain exemplary,” the statement read.

The Council noted that her death comes at a time when her experience and mentorship are most needed in efforts to strengthen professionalism and inclusivity within Nigeria’s media landscape.

During her tenure as NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Mrs. Esene was celebrated for her strong advocacy for gender equity, professional development, and ethical journalism.

The NUJ FCT Council prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and for God to grant her family, colleagues, and the entire journalism community the fortitude to bear the loss.

Funeral arrangements, according to the family, will be announced in due course.
