Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has strongly condemned the reported targeting of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore’s X account by the Department of State Services (DSS), describing the move as an attack on democratic freedoms.

In a statement issued on Monday, Adeyanju said it was “unacceptable” for security agencies to attempt to silence individuals because of their opinions, stressing that citizens have a constitutional right to freely express their views, even when those views challenge those in authority.

“The targeting of Omoyele Sowore’s account by the DSS is unacceptable and should be condemned. Every citizen has the right to freely share their opinions, even when those opinions do not align with those in authority. The use of state power to silence and intimidate individuals is an attack on the very freedoms that sustain a healthy democracy,” Adeyanju stated.

He noted that Sowore has consistently been a target of intolerant governments but continues to speak courageously on issues affecting Nigeria. Adeyanju added that Sowore’s voice carries significant weight, not only as an activist but also as a former presidential candidate.

“His criticisms of the president or government policies must be treated with respect, no matter how uncomfortable they may be for those in power,” Adeyanju said.

He called on democratic institutions, civil society, and the public to remain vigilant in defending freedom of expression, warning that democracy is weakened whenever dissenting voices are suppressed.
