Air Algérie, Algeria’s national carrier, is set to commence its inaugural direct flight from Algiers to Abuja on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
This milestone, announced by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signifies a major step in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Algeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, highlighted the significance of the new route.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce the commencement of Air Algérie’s inaugural direct flight service from Algiers to Abuja, scheduled for April 6, 2025. This historic development marks a major milestone in the strengthening of diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Algeria. It is also a direct outcome of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between both nations, which has now culminated in this successful venture.
’’The new route, operated by a Boeing 737 aircraft, will enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and facilitate trade and investment between the two countries. This initiative underscores the shared commitment of Nigeria and Algeria to deepening bilateral cooperation in aviation, commerce, and cultural exchanges’’, he said.
The Ministry commended the vital role played by the Embassy of Nigeria in Algiers in facilitating this achievement.
The Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers, leaders of the Nigerian community in Algeria, and representatives of the Algerian government are expected to be on board the inaugural flight.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant aviation authorities, congratulated Air Algérie and assured all necessary support to ensure the success and sustainability of this service.
This initiative is expected to further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Nigeria and Algeria while creating new opportunities for mutual growth. Additionally, the affordability of fares and Algeria’s proximity to Europe will provide Nigerians with a convenient gateway to European destinations, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a key regional hub for business, tourism, and transit.
The Nigerian government encouraged citizens and the business community to leverage this enhanced air connectivity, which will operate twice weekly, to explore trade, tourism, and cultural exchange opportunities between both countries. ’’We eagerly anticipate a successful inaugural flight and a thriving partnership with Air Algérie,” the statement concluded.
This development is widely seen as a significant boost for regional integration, economic growth, and enhanced people-to-people interactions between the two nations.
