Coronavirus:  Weddings, Burials, Night Clubs Banned in Ebonyi State

As Gov. Directs Civil Servants from Grade One to 10 to Work From Home

Abakaliki: Ebonyi state government in its proactive measures to prevent the Coronavirus pandemic in the state, has banned wedding ceremonies, night clubs, burial ceremonies, conferences and other social activities that attract crowds.

Governor David Umahi, announced this in a town hall meeting on covid-19, held at Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre, Abakaliki.

The governor who was represented by his Deputy, Barr. Kelechi Igwe, announced that the ban which took effect from March 22, will last for one month, and directed that civil servants from grade level one to 10 will from March 25, work from their homes, except those on essential services.

Governor Umahi, also announced that isolation centre has been constructed and equipped at Unity Square, Abakaliki, while Government has ordered the procurement of 150 infrared Thermometer Test Tubes as well as hand sanitizers, adding that another isolation centre is nearing completion at Ebonyi border with Enugu State, and will be replicated in all entry points into the state for compulsory testing of people coming into the state.

The governor who directed Council chairmen to immediately constitute Emergency Health workers committees to visit all markets and homes and conduct compulsory test on the people, said it is now compulsory for worship centres, Rice mills and hotels to provide test kits and hand sanitizers in their various places of worships and businesses, warning that more stringent measures will be adopted if abused.

The secretary to the state government, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala, in his remark, said the Town Hall meeting became necessary because of the government’s full determination to protect the lives of the people from coronavirus, lassa fever and other health related problems.

He charged the participants to take the message home, so as to ensure that safety measures were adopted.

The town hall meeting was attended by Traditional rulers, Chairmen of local government areas, Coordinators of Development Centres,Town Union Executives, Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN), Health workers and other relevant stakeholders in the state.
