Task Students on Financial Discipline

In line with the Global Money Week 2019, the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) has gone an extra mile in a bid to ensure that young Nigerians are financially disciplined and independent by engaging in school mentoring programmes.
The Apex bank, took its financial literacy awareness campaign to select secondary schools in Abuja and among the schools visited were, the Government Secondary School Wuse and the Community Staff Secondary School Asokoro in Abuja.
The aim of the awareness and mentoring programme, which is in line with the Global Money Week theme, “Learn, Save and Earn”, is to ensure that young Nigerians are financially literate with the requisite knowledge to earn and save money.
Supporting the campaign with Warren Buffet’s quote, “Do not SAVE What is left after SPENDING but SPEND what is left after SAVING”, the CBN Deputy Governor, Financial System Stability, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, disclosed that the campaign is an opportunity to impart knowledge to the children on money matters and how to be financially independent.
“I feel very honored to have an opportunity to impart knowledge to those younger than us and telling them things that we wished we knew and wished we said.
“The CBN is working to create an economy that benefits all Nigerians, to be financially literate and to know the proper ways to earn and save money”, she noted.
Ahmad, urged the children to study hard, learn, understand what they like to do and how they can use those skills to change the world, adding that learning yields skills which are rewarded.
In her words, “When you learn, try to find out what you like to do. When you learn and you have a valuable skill, something to offer and worthy of changing the world, that way you are sought after”.
While stating that integrity is a virtue the children must imbibe in the line of business, she called on parents to teach their wards to invest on needs and not wants, aimed only at pleasing others.
Speaking on right ways of investing, she said, “when you earn try to save, when you save, try to invest. Life is not only about getting money, you have to keep the money”.
Earlier in his welcome address, the CBN Director, Consumer Protection Department, Mr. Kofo Abdulsalam-Alada, noted that the Central Bank plays a focal role in ensuring that the Global Money Week is a success in Nigeria.
He reminded the students to save so as to secure their future.
The Global Money Week is a child and youth initiative, an annual financial awareness campaign aimed at educating children and young people to learn about money matters, such as savings, livelihood and entrepreneurship.
The school mentoring programme also held in six selected states in addition to Abuja.
