Brigadier-General Yahaya Pela Habila has been recognized for more than two decades of support for grassroots football development in Nigeria, with his contributions spanning youth competitions, clubs, players and coaches.
Habila, a senior officer of the Nigerian Army Finance Corps and currently Director of Budget at Army Headquarters, has sponsored several grassroots football competitions and provided financial and logistical support to players, coaches and clubs across the country.
During his tour of duty at the 82 Division, Enugu, he sponsored the Dragon Football Competition for youths and also became a major source of support for Rangers International of Enugu.
His interventions have extended to other clubs, including Gombe United FC, which he supported during the club’s run to the Federation Cup finals in 2012 and 2013.
He also supported Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi with logistics equipment and provided assistance to the family of the club’s late coach, Solomon Ogbeide.
Beyond domestic competitions, Habila has reportedly facilitated opportunities for young Nigerian footballers to secure contracts with clubs abroad, with his interventions said to have been made without seeking personal returns.
Football agent Chukwuma Udofia Ayaya described Habila as a selfless supporter of the game who had helped several players pursue their football careers.
According to Ayaya, Habila’s passion for football and willingness to support players and other stakeholders have made him an important contributor to grassroots development.
Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in September 1998 as a member of the 45 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Habila has held various appointments in finance, audit, budgeting and pensions administration.
He is a recipient of several military honours, including the Distinguished Service Star, Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star and various Operational Medals.
Habila holds a PhD in Security and Strategic Studies from Nasarawa State University, Keffi; an MSSc in Security and Development from Bangladesh University of Professionals, Dhaka; an MSc in Security and Strategic Studies; and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
He also holds a BSc in Economics from the Nigerian Defence Academy and a Professional Accounting Certificate from the Nigerian College of Accountancy, Jos.
A former student of Nigerian Military School, Zaria, Habila’s interests include reading, writing, football, volleyball, farming and travelling.
