The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) regarding an incident at the Lekki Transmission Substation, saying the disruption was caused by faults on the DisCo’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.
TCN, in a statement signed by its management on Thursday, said contrary to EKEDC’s claim that its T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDC’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at about 4:34am on August 26, 2026.
According to the transmission company, the feeders tripped due to overcurrent and an earth fault, which subsequently resulted in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of TCN’s TR1-60MVA, 132/33kV transformer.
The incident was accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke, prompting TCN’s maintenance crew to respond immediately.
TCN said its maintenance team rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both the primary and secondary breakers later the same day.
However, the company explained that when EKEDC attempted a trial closure of its Oniru feeder, the same relay indications reoccurred, causing another trip and requiring further corrective work.
TCN stressed that there was no outage on its T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDC, insisting that the incident was strictly related to faults on the DisCo’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders.
“The TCN technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the company said.
The transmission company assured electricity customers affected by the incident that it was actively addressing the fault and regretted the inconvenience caused by the disruption.
TCN also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the transmission network and putting in place a more robust electricity transmission system.
