President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rt. Honourable Andy Burnham on his assumption of office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation with the UK under the new administration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, President Tinubu also congratulated the Government and people of the United Kingdom on what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless transition of leadership, saying the process once again demonstrated the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.
The President recalled his productive engagement with the immediate past British Prime Minister during his official visit to the United Kingdom in March 2026 and expressed confidence that Prime Minister Burnham would build on the progress made during that visit.
Tinubu said he looked forward to working closely with the new British leader to deepen cooperation and explore new opportunities for partnership across areas of mutual interest.
He also expressed his desire to meet with Prime Minister Burnham at the earliest opportunity, both bilaterally and within the framework of the Commonwealth, to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom for the benefit of both countries.
President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate with the Burnham administration in advancing shared priorities and addressing common global challenges.
