The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has confirmed that retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu is eligible to serve on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) board, stating that there are no regulatory impediments to his appointment.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis conveyed the position in a letter dated October 19, 2026, addressed to the NBBF President, Dr Abdullahi Mustapha.
According to the letter, Ahmedu has been a member of FIBA bodies since 1997, making him the most senior Nigerian in the international basketball governing structure.
The confirmation comes amid ongoing discussions over the composition and administration of Nigerian basketball following the NBBF elective congress held on October 15, which produced a new board for the 2026–2030 tenure.
Ahmedu, who serves as President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, has decades of experience in international basketball administration and remains a prominent figure in the sport.
FIBA also congratulated Mustapha and the newly elected board members, welcoming the federation’s commitment to good governance and elections conducted in line with its constitution and applicable FIBA regulations.
The international governing body further acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing NBBF board under the leadership of Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida.
Ahmedu’s eligibility confirmation has renewed calls for his experience and institutional knowledge to be recognized in Nigeria’s basketball administration.
His supporters believe that his longstanding involvement in international basketball could help strengthen the administration and development of the sport in Nigeria, while enhancing the country’s representation within the global basketball community.
The development places renewed attention on how the NBBF can harness the experience, relationships and knowledge accumulated by seasoned administrators to advance basketball at all levels.
