Chief (Sir) Bassey Asuquo Bassey Williams, KSJI, is emerging as a new force in traditional leadership in Etamkpini Qua Clan of Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State, combining the responsibilities of the traditional institution with a strong commitment to community development.
Born in July 1977 to the late Chief and Mrs. Asuquo Bassey Williams, Chief Bassey comes from a distinguished traditional family. His late father was the Village Head of Esuk Adim in Etamkpini Qua Clan and Family Head of the Osoni Nkang Osong Royal Family.
A graduate of Geology from the University of Calabar, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in 2002, Bassey has built a career in plantation management and currently serves as Plantation Manager with Tropic Palm Limited in Ondo State.
His commitment to faith and community service has also shaped his public life. A devout Catholic and Knight of St. John International, he previously served as Secretary of the Etamkpini Qua Clan Council before his appointment as Village Head-Elect of Masangha Village in April 2025 by the then Clan Head, Ntoe Anthony Effiong Etim.
His traditional journey advanced in February 2026 when he was conferred with the Ekpe title of Ntoe Mgbe Oku Akama, fulfilling a key requirement for the exalted stool of Ntoe.
On July 24, 2026, the Etamkpini Qua Clan Council presented him to the President of the Odukpani Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, Etinyin Otu Asuquo Otu Mesembe VI. Following the required screening, he was admitted into the Council.
Since assuming office as Ntoe, Chief Bassey Williams has moved to translate his leadership vision into practical action.
He completed outstanding traditional rites, including the appeasement of the clan deity, before constituting the Etamkpini Management Committee to coordinate the affairs of the Clan.
He also inaugurated a Special Committee to organize the burial rites of former Clan Heads who had passed away, underscoring his emphasis on preserving the dignity, history and traditions of the community.
Beyond traditional affairs, his administration has focused on practical interventions aimed at improving the welfare of residents.
Among the initiatives is the acquisition of a 75-horsepower speedboat to improve transportation along the Clan’s waterways. He also facilitated the provision of 10 solar-powered floodlights donated to the community by Real Oil Plantation, one of the Clan’s tenants.
Economic development has equally featured prominently in his early tenure.
Chief Bassey paid a courtesy visit to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Cross River State to discuss the proposed establishment of Giant Cement in the Clan, assuring the state government of the community’s cooperation.
The engagement was followed by another milestone in August 2026, when he formally performed the traditional rites to usher in the operations of Giant Cement Works Limited for the construction of a cement factory in Etamkpini Qua Clan.
These developments have placed Chief Bassey Williams’ administration at the intersection of tradition and modern development, as the traditional institution responds to the changing needs and aspirations of the community.
His supporters believe the early achievements of his tenure demonstrate a leadership determined to attract development, strengthen community administration and preserve the cultural identity of Etamkpini Qua Clan.
With both the young and elderly looking forward to more development, the emergence of Chief Bassey Williams as Ntoe has ushered in what many within the Clan regard as a new chapter in its traditional leadership.
Long live Etamkpini Qua Clan.
Long live the Ntoe.
