The Federal Government Independent Investigative Committee probing the reported deaths of 37 persons in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna, Niger State, has requested an additional two weeks to conclude its investigation.
Chairman of the Committee, Jonathan Kure, (Retd.), disclosed this during a press briefing, explaining that the extension became necessary due to the volume of evidence gathered and the need to obtain outstanding forensic and pathology reports.
The Committee’s initial deadline was October 7, 2026, but it is now seeking to submit its final report by October 21.
Kure said the Committee has so far inspected the custody facility and the site of the incident, interacted with survivors and families of the deceased, and obtained statements from NSCDC officers and other witnesses.
He added that documentary and forensic evidence is still being reviewed, while all persons implicated in the incident, including suspended officers, are being given an opportunity to respond in line with the principles of fairness and due process.
He assured Nigerians that the investigation would be thorough, credible and capable of withstanding public scrutiny. He noted that preliminary issues requiring attention include possible institutional lapses, overzealousness and the need for additional training of some personnel.
Kure also expressed condolences to the families of security personnel recently killed in another incident, describing them as Nigerians who lost their lives in national service.
