The longstanding cultural relationship between China and Nigeria took centre stage in Abuja as designers, models, performers, government officials and creative industry stakeholders gathered for a China-Nigeria Fashion Show celebrating cultural exchange through fashion, music and performance.
The event brought together Chinese and Nigerian fashion traditions, with models from both countries showcasing designs inspired by their respective cultural identities, traditional attire and contemporary creative expressions.
In his remarks at the event, Yang Jianxing, representing the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria and the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, described fashion as more than clothing, saying it serves as a cultural language capable of connecting people across geographical boundaries.
He said the fashion show provided an opportunity for Chinese and Nigerian cultural expressions to interact, noting that every stitch and design could contribute to strengthening people-to-people relations between the two countries.
Jianxing highlighted traditional Chinese garments including Hanfu, Tang-style clothing, Qipao and Mamianqun, while noting the diversity of Nigerian fashion traditions represented by garments and fabrics such as Aso-Oke, Agbada, Buba, Iro and Gele.
According to him, clothing in both societies carries meanings connected to identity, tradition, festivals, weddings and other important social occasions.
He noted that the exchange of cultural and fashion elements could contribute to new creative opportunities and strengthen the fashion industries and creative economies of both countries.
The Chinese representative also noted that 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria, describing the milestone and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges as opportunities to deepen cultural understanding and practical cooperation.
He expressed the commitment of the Chinese side to expanding people-to-people exchanges and cooperation across cultural and creative sectors.
Also speaking at the event, Gabriel Amudipe, Director of Education Support Services at the Ministry of Education, delivered a goodwill message, commending the organisers for creating a platform where young people and creative practitioners could learn from one another through culture, fashion and artistic expression.
Amudipe said cultural programmes of this nature could support greater understanding between societies while providing opportunities for young people to develop and showcase their creative talents.
He encouraged participants, particularly young people, to see cultural exchange not only as an avenue for entertainment but also as an opportunity to acquire knowledge, build relationships and explore new creative possibilities.
The fashion show featured a broad range of cultural and artistic presentations.
The National Troupe presented an Afro-contemporary dance, while another presentation, titled “A Journey Through Ancient Fashion,” took the audience through historical fashion expressions.
The programme also featured “Nigeria Royal Traditions,” with models from China and Nigeria presenting designs inspired by traditional identities.
Students of the Chinese language class at the China Cultural Center in Nigeria performed a dance titled “The Wondering Fish,” adding a youthful dimension to the cultural exchange.
Other segments included “The Colours of China,” which highlighted traditional Chinese fashion and aesthetics, followed by presentations focusing on Nigerian fashion and contemporary creative expressions.
The audience was also treated to musical performances, including a Chinese song and “Journey Through Beautiful China,” alongside the Nigerian song “Let’s Go and Make a Change” performed by Capital Voice Abuja.
The runway subsequently shifted to modern and contemporary designs, featuring fashion models from both countries and showcasing the creative possibilities of blending Chinese and Nigerian influences.
A dedicated China-Nigeria fusion segment brought the two traditions together through fashion, with models from China and Nigeria displaying contemporary designs inspired by elements from both cultures.
The event also featured the participation and support of stakeholders including Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy; Muazu Hajiya Bintu, CEO of Sygnific Stitches and Fabrics; Jiang Junjie, Deputy Managing Director of CCECC; and Zhang Xinyu, Director-General of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria.
Jianxing expressed appreciation to the designers, models, performers, organisers and supporting organisations, particularly Sygnific Stitches and Fabrics and the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria, for contributing to the success of the event.
The China-Nigeria Fashion Show demonstrated how fashion, music and performance can provide practical platforms for cultural dialogue while creating opportunities for creative professionals from both countries to interact.
As China and Nigeria mark 55 years of diplomatic relations, the event offered another avenue for people-to-people engagement, with fashion serving as a bridge between traditional heritage and contemporary creativity.
