Excitement is building in Enugu as more than 30,000 athletes prepare to participate in the 2nd Enugu City International Marathon scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The marathon, organized by Nilayo Sports Management with the full support of the Enugu State Government, has attracted elite runners, grassroots athletes and fun-run participants from across Nigeria, Africa and the diaspora.
With 10 days to the race, organizers said final preparations were in top gear, including arrangements for the Marathon Expo, which will serve as the official kit collection centre for registered runners and host brand activations by sponsors.
The week-long pre-race programme is expected to feature a mix of sports, music, wellness and business activities as the Coal City prepares for the international event.
The organizers will also hold the Enugu City International Marathon World Press Conference on Thursday, August 28, where government officials, organizers, sponsors and elite athletes are expected to provide updates on final race preparations, security arrangements and the prize structure.
The 42km Elite Marathon will be flagged off at 6:30 a.m. from ShopRite on Abakaliki Road, while the 10km Fun Run will begin at 8:30 a.m. from Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road and finish at Opara Square by 12:30 p.m.
According to the organizers, security, medical, hydration and traffic management arrangements have been finalized to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators and deliver a world-class race experience.
Registration for the marathon remains open through the official race portal, www.enugucitymarathon.com.
The organizers said the event is expected to showcase Enugu’s sporting, cultural and tourism potential while further positioning the state as a major destination for sports and related economic activities.
