As political parties prepare to begin campaigns on August 7, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria (APPMEN) has called on governments at all levels to demonstrate greater accountability by completing abandoned and ongoing projects and fulfilling campaign promises made to Nigerians.
In a statement issued by its National Secretariat, APPMEN urged political leaders to implement at least 50 per cent of the commitments made during the last election cycle, saying such action would help rebuild public trust and strengthen confidence in democratic governance.
The association stressed that leaders must place national interest above personal and political considerations, noting that Nigeria’s progress depends on purposeful leadership and policies that promote unity, development and national pride.
APPMEN also highlighted the need for greater investment in youth empowerment and the creation of an enabling environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), describing them as critical drivers of economic growth and stability.
According to the association, Nigeria possesses enormous human and natural resources that remain largely untapped, urging governments to harness these assets to create jobs, expand business opportunities and improve citizens’ living standards.
While commending federal, state and local governments for what it described as significant achievements recorded over the past three years, APPMEN challenged public office holders to intensify efforts to accelerate national development
The media proprietors’ body further called on citizens and other stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to nation-building, insisting that achieving a prosperous Nigeria requires collective responsibility.
Speaking on the forthcoming election campaigns, APPMEN advised political parties and candidates to reject hate speech, violence and other actions capable of undermining national peace. It urged political actors to focus on issue-based campaigns that would enable voters to make informed choices.
The association also called on governments to justify the substantial allocations received over the past three years through visible projects and programmes that have had direct impact on the lives of Nigerians.
APPMEN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at building what it described as “the Nigeria we want.”
