Team Nigeria delivered another impressive outing on Day Seven of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claiming a historic gold medal in the men’s shot put, while Tobi Amusan secured bronze and several Nigerian athletes advanced to major finals.
Enekwechi emerged as the standout performer after winning the men’s shot put title with a superb fifth-round throw of 21.07 metres. The victory earned the Nigerian co-captain his first Commonwealth Games gold medal and Nigeria’s eighth gold medal of the Games, edging New Zealand’s Tom Walsh in a fiercely contested event.
In the women’s 100 metres hurdles final, world record holder Tobi Amusan added another medal to Nigeria’s tally, finishing third in 12.60 seconds to claim bronze. Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas won the race in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmons took silver in 12.41 seconds.
Nigeria also impressed on the track as Samuel Ogazi stormed into the men’s 400 metres final after winning his semifinal in a championship-record time of 44.52 seconds, the fastest semifinal ever recorded in Commonwealth Games history.
Edidiong Udo will join Ogazi in the final after his third-place finish in the semifinal was upgraded to second following the disqualification of Jamaica’s Antonio Watson. Udo had initially crossed the line in 45.55 seconds.
In the men’s 200 metres, Udodi Onwuzurike booked a place in the final after finishing second in his semifinal in 20.22 seconds behind Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor, who won in 20.20 seconds.
Attention will also be on Ella Onojuvwevwo in the women’s 400 metres final, where the Nigerian enters as one of the leading medal contenders. Her personal best of 49.47 seconds ranks her among the world’s fastest this season.
In the decathlon, Jami Schlueter remained in medal contention after the opening day, sitting fourth overall with 4,196 points. His performances included 10.70 seconds in the 100 metres, 7.16 metres in the long jump, 15.35 metres in the shot put, 1.97 metres in the high jump and 49.71 seconds in the 400 metres.
Meanwhile, Unyima Uwak finished fifth in the women’s T47 100 metres final, recording a season’s best time of 12.63 seconds.
With another gold medal secured and multiple athletes advancing to finals, Team Nigeria heads into the closing stages of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with renewed confidence as it seeks to strengthen its position on the medals table.
