Organizers of the Renewed Hope Unity Cup have unveiled plans for what is being described as Nigeria’s largest grassroots football competition, with teams from all 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) expected to participate in the nationwide tournament.
The initiative was officially launched on Wednesday in Abuja with the unveiling of the tournament’s logo. Organizers said the competition is designed to promote grassroots football development, talent discovery, national unity, youth empowerment and community development.
Speaking at the unveiling, the National Convener of the Renewed Hope Unity Cup, Hon. Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, described the competition as a national project that will provide opportunities for talented young footballers regardless of their location or socio-economic background.
According to Kwande, the tournament goes beyond football by fostering national cohesion, promoting healthy lifestyles and creating sustainable opportunities for Nigerian youths in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He disclosed that all matches would be professionally produced and streamed live on digital platforms to give participating players exposure to football clubs, academies, licensed agents, national team selectors and international scouts.
Kwande also announced that participating teams would receive complete football kits, including jerseys, boots, footballs, training bibs and cones, while players and officials would benefit from welfare packages, insurance coverage where applicable, and match allowances.
As part of efforts to strengthen grassroots football, he said the organizers would launch a nationwide Train-the-Trainer Programme in partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Institute of Sports (NIS). The programme will equip selected coaches from each of the 774 LGAs with modern coaching techniques and certification before they return to train coaches and football instructors in their communities.
Beyond football development, the organizers said the competition is expected to stimulate economic activities in transportation, hospitality, tourism, sports marketing, media and event management, while promoting leadership, discipline, teamwork and entrepreneurship among young participants.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association and Convener of the tournament, Yahaya Kwande, announced that player registration and distribution of kits would commence on October 1, with all matches to be streamed live.
He said the maiden edition would feature male players aged between 18 and 21, while a women’s competition is planned for future editions.
Nigeria Football Federation Board Member and Chairman of the Benue State Football Association, Barrister Paul Edeh, described the initiative as a major boost for grassroots football, noting that it would create opportunities for talented players from rural and underserved communities to be discovered.
Former Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Chairman, Victor Irole, also praised the initiative, saying football remains one of the strongest unifying forces in Nigeria and that the tournament could strengthen national unity while creating life-changing opportunities for thousands of young people.
Organizers expressed optimism that the Renewed Hope Unity Cup would become one of Nigeria’s most impactful grassroots sports programmes, strengthening football structures nationwide and expanding opportunities for emerging talents.
The tournament will be staged under the theme: “One Nation. One Vision. 774 Local Governments. Endless Opportunities. Football Unites. Football Empowers. Football Builds the Nation.”
