The National Sports Commission (NSC) has attributed Nigeria’s impressive performance at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, to improved athletes’ welfare and quality leadership introduced since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu restored the Commission.
Speaking in Glasgow on Tuesday, the Special Assistant on Media to the Director General of the NSC, Mr. Kola Daniel, said the reforms implemented by the Commission’s leadership have played a significant role in Team Nigeria’s success, with the country already winning six gold and four silver medals at the Games.
Daniel said the NSC, under the leadership of Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, has placed athletes’ welfare at the centre of its programmes through initiatives such as instant cash rewards for medal winners and training grants.
According to him, the policy of paying athletes immediately after winning medals has boosted morale and strengthened their determination to excel on the international stage.
He added that the Commission’s leadership style has inspired confidence among Nigerian athletes, fostering a winning mentality and convincing them that no target is beyond their reach.
Daniel expressed confidence that the future of Nigerian sports remains bright, noting that the ongoing reforms are laying a solid foundation for sustained success across various sporting disciplines.
He also praised President Tinubu for providing the leadership and support that have transformed the nation’s sports sector through the restoration of the National Sports Commission and its programmes.
Looking ahead, Daniel said he expects Nigeria’s Super Falcons to continue the country’s winning momentum at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they are aiming to secure a record-extending 11th continental title.
