Team Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games have received a major boost, with head throwing coach Gabriel Opuana describing the training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, as the best the country has ever had ahead of an international competition.
With just days until the opening ceremony in Glasgow on July 23, athletes are intensifying final preparations in an environment that has drawn praise for its world-class facilities, efficient organization and strong welfare support.
Opuana, a former national hammer throw champion, commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for creating a professional atmosphere that allows athletes to focus entirely on performance.
“For a long time in our history of preparations for international competitions, we have never had it so good,” the 63-year-old coach said.
He noted that the team has enjoyed excellent accommodation, quality training facilities, nutritious meals and a smooth camping experience free from the challenges that have often affected previous preparations.
According to Opuana, athlete welfare has remained a priority, with competitors receiving daily allowances, official kits and continuous support from coaches, medical personnel and officials.
He also praised former Nigerian long jump star Yusuf Alli for his hands-on role in ensuring the camp runs efficiently. “We are happy to have Yusuf Alli around. He is always available to provide everything that is needed. The NSC has done a job we must commend them,” Opuana said.
Beyond the sporting facilities, Team Nigeria has also enjoyed Nigerian cuisine throughout its stay in Aberdeen, helping athletes feel at home as they prepare for the Games.
In another encouraging development, Opuana revealed that the entire contingent is injury-free as preparations enter the final phase, boosting optimism for a successful outing in Glasgow.
While applauding the NSC’s investment in the team, the experienced coach urged the athletes to repay the confidence with outstanding performances and called on Nigerians to support the contingent throughout the competition.
Team Nigeria heads into the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games aiming to surpass its impressive performance at the Birmingham Games, where it won 35 medals, including 12 gold. The National Sports Commission has set a target of 20 gold medals as competition runs from July 23 to August 4.
