Former Super Eagles striker and global sports ambassador, Daniel Amokachi has been appointed as a United Nations Football for the Goals (FFTG) Champion, joining an elite group of football icons committed to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the power of sport.
Amokachi was named alongside several prominent figures in world football, including former England international Eni Aluko, legendary coach Carlo Ancelotti, Brazilian icon Zico (Arthur Antunes Coimbra), Venezuelan star Deyna Castellanos, South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana, South Korean legend Park Ji-sung, Inter Milan vice-president Javier Zanetti, former Afghanistan women’s national team captain Khalida Popal, Spanish forward Borja Iglesias, Australia’s Alex Chidiac, Alessandro Circati and Cameron Burgess, as well as former Australian player and FIFA executive Moya Dodd.
According to an official letter signed by Roberto Skinner, Deputy Director of Outreach at the United Nations Department of Global Communications, the newly appointed champions form a select group of influential players, former footballers, coaches and media personalities who will use their platforms to amplify UN campaigns, mobilize communities and advocate for key global issues, including equality, inclusion, climate action, health and human rights.
Reacting to the appointment, Amokachi expressed his excitement and commitment to the initiative.
“I am delighted to be named as one of the UN Football for the Goals Champions. It means a lot to me, and I am ready to work with the other members of the team to achieve success on this journey,” he said.
The Football for the Goals initiative is a United Nations platform that harnesses the global reach and influence of football to promote the Sustainable Development Goals. It brings together key stakeholders across the football community to inspire action and contribute to building a more peaceful, inclusive and sustainable world through sport.
