With nine days to the start of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Team Nigeria has stepped up preparations as athletes and officials continue to arrive for the pre-Games training camp ahead of the opening ceremony on July 23.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) said the Nigerian contingent has been finalized, while athletes have begun receiving their camping allowances as part of measures to enhance their welfare and ensure they are fully prepared for the competition.

Several Nigeria-based and overseas athletes have already assembled in the United Kingdom, including United States-based sprint star Kayinsola Ajayi, who recently joined the team’s training camp.

The country’s 3×3 basketball team, currently camped in Amsterdam, has also intensified its preparations, playing the first of two scheduled international friendly matches. The second fixture is expected to further fine-tune the team’s readiness before it joins the rest of the Nigerian delegation in Scotland.

More Team Nigeria athletes and officials are expected to arrive in Aberdeen over the weekend, completing the team’s assembly ahead of the Games.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held from July 23 to August 2, with athletes from across the Commonwealth competing in 11 days of sporting action.

Team captains expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, saying Nigerian athletes remain focused, determined and committed to delivering impressive performances that will make the country proud.
