The Independent National Electoral Commission has partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to strengthen integrity in the electoral process through a two-day Anti-Corruption Education and Sensitisation Workshop for its staff ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The workshop, themed “Corruption-Free Election: Integrity Matters (C-FEIM),” commenced on Monday at INEC headquarters in Abuja, with participants drawn from across the Commission.
Declaring the workshop open, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, represented by National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, described the training as timely, noting that it comes as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
She said INEC, as Nigeria’s electoral umpire, has a responsibility to champion values that strengthen democracy, stressing that credible elections are the bedrock of democratic governance.
According to her, any compromise in the electoral process weakens public confidence and undermines national development.
Agbamuche-Mbu commended the ICPC for organising the workshop, saying it is designed to equip electoral officials with the knowledge and ethical standards needed to deliver transparent and credible elections. She encouraged participants to actively engage in discussions, ask questions and share experiences throughout the training.
Speaking at the event, ICPC Chairman, Musa Adamu, represented by the Commission’s Director of Legal Services, Henry Emore, described corruption as one of the greatest obstacles to national development.
Emore said the workshop reflects the anti-graft agency’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote free, fair and credible elections. He noted that electoral malpractice often results in costly supplementary elections, increased security challenges and a rise in corruption-related petitions and litigation.
He stressed that the responsibility entrusted to INEC demands the highest standards of accountability, transparency and professionalism, adding that the fight against corruption requires collective action.
Emore also commended electoral officers for their dedication and sacrifices in carrying out their responsibilities, expressing confidence that the workshop would enhance the integrity and credibility of future elections in Nigeria.
