Nigeria’s impressive rise in international tennis has continued with young sensation Seun Ogunsakin securing a place in the main draw of the Wimbledon Championships after a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory over Canada’s Benjamin Azar.

Ogunsakin’s qualification for one of the world’s most prestigious Grand Slam tournaments marks another significant milestone for Nigerian tennis and underscores the growing success of efforts to develop young talents capable of competing on the global stage.

The achievement comes amid renewed investment in sports development under the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Bukola Olopade. Their drive to strengthen grassroots sports, support athletes and expand opportunities for emerging talents has continued to produce positive results across various sporting disciplines.

Earlier this year, Nigeria made history by earning promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II for the first time in nearly three decades following a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in Lagos. The feat also marked the return of top-tier international tennis to Nigeria, with Lagos hosting a Davis Cup tie for the first time in 19 years.

The National Sports Commission congratulated the Nigeria Tennis Federation and Ogunsakin on the landmark achievement, expressing confidence in his ability to make the country proud at Wimbledon.

The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment that will produce more athletes capable of representing Nigeria with distinction on the global stage.
