The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks and announced the introduction of an online self-service registration platform for first-time voters.

The Commission disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chair, Information and Voter Education Committee, saying the decision followed a review of the nationwide CVR exercise and feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organizations and other stakeholders.

According to INEC, the registration exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, but has now been extended to Sunday, July 26, 2026, to provide additional opportunity for eligible Nigerians who are yet to register.

The electoral body said the extension underscores its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters ahead of future electoral activities.

INEC also announced the introduction of an online self-service voter registration option for eligible first-time voters. The service will become available from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org, where a step-by-step registration guide is also provided.

According to the Commission, the platform will enable eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without physically visiting an INEC office.

It added that the system features robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks designed to preserve the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

INEC urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration window and the new technology-driven registration option.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process, while advancing the use of technology to improve citizens’ experience in Nigeria’s electoral process.
