President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Thursday officially send off Team Nigeria ahead of the contingent’s departure to the United Kingdom for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland
The send-off ceremony, scheduled to take place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, is expected to underscore the Federal Government’s support for the Nigerian contingent as the athletes embark on the final phase of preparations for the Games.
During the event, President Tinubu is expected to encourage the athletes and officials to compete with honour, resilience and determination, while urging them to uphold Nigeria’s reputation for sporting excellence on the international stage.
Nigeria heads into the Glasgow Games seeking to build on its outstanding performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where the country finished as Africa’s highest-ranked nation on the medals table with 35 medals—12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.
The Nigerian contingent has been in a training camp in Abuja, where athletes have undergone intensive preparations ahead of the competition. Team Nigeria is scheduled to depart the country on Friday for Aberdeen, Scotland, where it will participate in a three-week training camp before moving to Glasgow for the Games.
A total of 74 athletes will represent Nigeria across 10 sports at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will be held from July 23 to August 2.
President Tinubu has consistently reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes and expressed confidence in the country’s ability to excel at major international sporting events.
