The Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), St. Mary’s Parish, Karu, Abuja, has successfully concluded its 2026 Youth Week with a renewed call for greater youth participation in church activities and leadership development.

Held from June 14 to 21, 2026, the week-long celebration brought together young Catholics under the theme, “Take Courage, I Have Overcome the World!” (John 16:33), with activities focused on faith formation, leadership, empowerment, and fellowship.

The programme commenced with an Old School/Awareness Day and featured a variety of engaging activities, including a spiritual talk, leadership seminar, training and empowerment session, general knowledge conversation, question-and-answer forum, and a praise, worship and Eucharistic adoration night. Participants also took part in sports and a movie night designed to promote unity and friendship among parish youths.

The celebration climaxed on Sunday, June 21, with a colourful Thanksgiving Mass attended by CYON patrons, parishioners, families, and invited guests. Youths adorned vibrant cultural attire, showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and diversity.

In a demonstration of commitment and responsibility, CYON members coordinated all liturgical duties during the Mass, serving as altar servers, choir members, lectors, and church wardens.

Speaking during the thanksgiving ceremony, CYON President, Emmanuel Onyemeziri, urged parents to encourage their children to actively participate in CYON activities, describing the organization as an important platform for youth development.

According to him, CYON plays a vital role in nurturing young people spiritually, morally, and socially, while equipping them with leadership skills necessary for the future.

“CYON is more than just a youth association; it is a platform where young people grow in faith, develop leadership skills, build character, and become responsible citizens. We encourage parents to support their children in becoming active members so they can benefit from these opportunities,” he said.

The Parish Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Leopold Shibu Ngek, MSP, commended the youths for their dedication, enthusiasm, and successful coordination of the week-long programme. He noted that the future of the Church remains bright when young people are empowered and guided in faith.

Also speaking, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Precious Agho, expressed appreciation to the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Alexander Titus Imoh, MSP, the chaplain, patrons, parishioners, benefactors, and all participants whose support contributed to the success of the event.

The 2026 Youth Week reaffirmed the commitment of CYON St. Mary’s Parish, Karu, to raising a generation of courageous, faith-filled, and socially responsible young Catholics equipped to overcome challenges and contribute positively to society.
