Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has arrived in Doha, Qatar, to formally assume his duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the State of Qatar.
Professor Yakubu, who completed his tenure as Chairman of INEC in 2025, was among the distinguished Nigerians recently appointed into the nation’s diplomatic service by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Upon his arrival in Doha on Wednesday, the Nigerian envoy was received by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a demonstration of the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria, Qatar, and the wider African diplomatic community, the reception was attended by 13 African ambassadors accredited to Qatar, the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and the President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) Qatar, Mr. Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
Professor Yakubu’s appointment marks a significant transition from electoral administration to diplomacy, placing him at the forefront of Nigeria’s engagement with one of the Middle East’s most influential economic and political actors.
As Nigeria’s envoy to Qatar, Ambassador Yakubu is expected to advance bilateral relations in key areas including energy cooperation, trade and investment, regional security, and diaspora engagement.
A major focus will be strengthening collaboration in the energy sector. Both Nigeria and Qatar are among the world’s leading holders of natural gas reserves, presenting opportunities for cooperation under Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative. Enhanced engagement is expected to support investment in gas infrastructure, technology transfer, and expanded energy partnerships.
Another critical priority will be attracting Qatari investment into Nigeria’s economy. With Qatar’s substantial sovereign wealth resources and growing global investment footprint, efforts will be directed toward promoting opportunities in agriculture, aviation, infrastructure, real estate, technology, and other strategic sectors.
Ambassador Yakubu is also expected to deepen diplomatic cooperation on regional and international issues. Qatar has increasingly played an active role in mediation and peace-building efforts across Africa and the Middle East, creating opportunities for stronger collaboration with Nigeria on matters of security, stability, and development.
In addition, engagement with the Nigerian community in Qatar will remain a key component of the mission’s activities. Strengthening consular services, protecting the welfare of Nigerians residing in the Gulf state, and encouraging diaspora participation in national development are expected to feature prominently in the ambassador’s agenda.
Observers note that the posting reflects Nigeria’s broader foreign policy objective of strengthening economic diplomacy and expanding strategic partnerships with key global actors in support of national development goals.
