The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat violent crimes across Abuja.

The unit was officially unveiled on Monday at the former SARS office located near Guzape Junction, Abuja, during an event attended by top security officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and senior police officers.

Speaking at the launch, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said the creation of the VCRU aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to proactively address growing security threats such as armed robbery, kidnapping, violent attacks, and organized criminal activities.

According to the CP, the newly established unit has been divided into five operational sectors across the FCT to improve surveillance, intelligence gathering, rapid response, and efficient deployment of security personnel.

Sanusi noted that officers deployed to the unit underwent careful screening and intensive training to ensure professionalism and operational efficiency. He stressed that personnel must operate with discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights.

He warned that acts of misconduct, extortion, harassment, abuse of authority, and other unethical practices would not be tolerated within the unit.

The police commissioner also called on residents of the FCT to support security agencies by providing timely and useful information that could help prevent crime and improve public safety.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the FCT Council of Chiefs, HRH Alhaji Dr. Adamu Baba Yunusa; Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General A.O. Onasanya; representatives of the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Army Headquarters Garrison, Nigerian Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or criminal activities through the nearest police station or the emergency lines: 08032003913 and 07057337653.
