The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has joined election observers and electoral experts from across the world at the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) holding in South Korea as part of activities for the country’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections.

Leading the Nigerian delegation is the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, who attended the opening ceremony of the programme in Seoul on Saturday.

The programme, organised by the National Election Commission of South Korea, is scheduled to run from May 29 to June 5, 2026, and is designed to provide a platform for election management bodies and international observers to study and share experiences on electoral processes and local government elections.

Members of the INEC delegation include National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.

During the programme, the delegation visited a polling centre in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where they observed early voting operations and monitored electoral procedures being deployed for the local elections.

INEC said the participation of its officials in the international programme would enhance the Commission’s knowledge of evolving electoral trends and international best practices in election administration, observation and democratic governance.

According to the Commission, the engagement also reflects its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process through global collaboration and institutional learning.
