The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has unveiled its Country Programme for Nigeria (2026–2030), calling for stronger political will, institutional reforms, and sustained partnerships to address growing security and development challenges.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, UNODC Country Representative, Chiek Toures, described Nigeria as being at a “defining moment,” stressing its influence on regional and global stability. He noted that threats such as drug trafficking, corruption, terrorism, and organized crime continue to strain institutions.

The programme, UNODC’s most comprehensive framework for Nigeria, focuses on strengthening justice systems, combating corruption, addressing organized crime, and promoting human rights-based counter-terrorism efforts.

It also integrates public health strategies, particularly in drug treatment and prevention.

Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Binta L. Adamu Bello, reaffirmed commitment to tackling human trafficking, highlighting collaboration as key to success.

Similarly, the UN Resident Coordinator, Elsie Attafuah, emphasized the need for a whole-of-system approach, noting that justice, rule of law, and human security are critical to development.

Also speaking, Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described security as a shared responsibility and reaffirmed the Nigeria Police’s commitment to combating transnational crimes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by Yusuf Danladi Mustapha, pledged continued collaboration with the UN and partners to advance peace, justice, and stability.

UNODC noted that the programme’s success will depend on adequate funding and sustained cooperation, urging Nigeria to demonstrate strong ownership to unlock greater international support and deliver measurable impact.
