In the age of social media, public praise can be as fleeting as a trending topic. One moment, a public figure is celebrated for their achievements; the next, they’re the target of widespread ridicule for a minor slip-up. The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo deserves our understanding.
It’s easy to forget that behind the titles and public personas are human beings, just as susceptible to mistakes, nervousness, or even health conditions as the rest of us.
When we rush to create memes and jokes at their expense, we may be contributing to a culture of online shaming that can have real-world consequences.
Instead of instant judgment, what if we chose empathy? What if we took a moment to consider the pressure of the public eye, or the possibility of an underlying issue we know nothing about?
A moment of empathy can transform our perspective from ridicule to support, from division to understanding. Perhaps the people closest to him can do a better job of supporting him without being sycophants.
Let’s build a more civil and understanding community. Let’s remember the human behind the headline.
