The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced the successful registration of 96,085 new voters in just nine days as part of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State, ahead of the upcoming off-cycle governorship election.
According to the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the registration exercise, which covered all 326 registration centres across the state, recorded an average of over 10,600 new voters per day.
Olumekun, in a statement issued after the Commission’s regular weekly meeting held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, expressed satisfaction with both the high turnout and the peaceful conduct of the process.
“As of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, a total of 96,085 new voters had registered in Anambra State. In addition, 12,595 applicants requested transfers of their voter registration both within and outside the state while 7,061 individuals applied for updates to their records or replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs),” he noted.
Originally scheduled to conclude today, INEC has announced a three-day extension of the CVR in response to public appeals, with the new closing date set for Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Following the close of registration, the Commission will display the preliminary voters’ register for public scrutiny allowing for claims and objections as stipulated by law before the data is cleaned using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to eliminate duplications and ineligible entries.
A preliminary demographic breakdown reveals that 56,017 (58%) of the new registrants are female, while 50,429 (52.48%) fall within the youth bracket of 18 to 34 years.
Meanwhile, INEC has also disclosed that it received five additional letters of intent from groups seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of pending applications to 134. Details of these associations, including proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leaderships, have been made available on the Commission’s website and other public platforms.
INEC reiterated its commitment to keeping the public informed and engaged in all electoral processes as Nigeria prepares for the forthcoming elections.
