Participants of Course 33 from the National Defence College (NDC), Nigeria, have commenced a regional study tour across six African nations—Algeria, Benin, Egypt, Senegal, Tanzania, and Togo.
The tour aims to deepen their understanding of international relations, strategic security issues, and regional cooperation.
Leading one of the teams, NDC Commandant, Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, visited the Egypt Military Academy for Postgraduate and Strategic Studies, where he held discussions with the Academy’s Commandant, Major General Abdul Mahmoud. Their meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, promoting economic development, and addressing regional security threats.
Admiral Olotu also toured Egypt’s Higher War College and National Defence College, engaging with their respective Commandants, Major General Ramadan Fathi Ali and Major General Hussem Hassein Ukkashah. During these interactions, he highlighted the importance of knowledge-sharing on defence strategies, military education, and collaborative security initiatives.
Speaking on the significance of the study tour, Admiral Olotu reiterated that NDC Nigeria remains committed to capacity-building in Nigeria and the wider subregion. He emphasized that the engagements offer participants a broader perspective on geopolitical and socio-economic dynamics while reinforcing Nigeria’s strategic partnerships. He further advocated for deeper military ties between Nigeria and Egypt, calling for enhanced collaboration between their armed forces and military institutions.
As part of his engagements in Egypt, the NDC Commandant also visited the Nigerian Embassy in Cairo, where he met with embassy officials to discuss regional stability, defence cooperation, and economic development. He stressed that the study tour reflects NDC’s dedication to expanding strategic perspectives, fostering international partnerships, and contributing to regional peace and security.
The regional study tour remains a crucial initiative in strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic and military relations across Africa, equipping NDC participants with the expertise needed to navigate contemporary security challenges.
