President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday swore in Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the council chamber of the presidential villa in Abuja.
Ariwoola who is the next most senior in the hierarchy of the Supreme Court, takes over from Ibrahim Muhammad, who resigned earlier on Monday on health grounds.
Justice Ariwoola who was born on August 22, 1958 and appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2011, was a Justice of the Court of Appeal between 2005 and 2011 after having been elevated from the State High Court of Oyo State.
He was first appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of record in Oyo State in 1992 from private legal practice.
Before his elevation to the Supreme Court, he served as Justice of the Court of Appeal in Kaduna, Enugu and Lagos Divisions. It was reported that Ariwoola will retire by 2028.
Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony were Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo; Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Usman Baba, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation.
