The Kano State Government, has declared Tuesday September 11 as public holiday, to mark the new Islamic year 1440 After Hijra (AH).
It is pertinent to note that, the Islamic New Year, also known as Arabic New Year or Hijri New Year , is the day that marks the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year, and is the day on which the year count is incremented.
The declaration, was contained in a statement signed by the state commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba on Monday in Kano.
According to the statement, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje congratulated Muslim faithful for witnessing the New Year, which commences in the month of Muharram, the first month in the lunar Islamic calendar.
It also urged Muslims to reflect on their deeds and activities during the past year and to use the occasion to offer prayers for peace and prosperity of the country.
It further reassured the people of the state government’s determination to work hard towards improving their living standards.
The statement called on Nigerians to join hands with the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to build a peaceful and harmonious country.
The first day of the year is observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.
The Muharram is expected to last from sunset, September 10 to nightfall, September 11 according to Wikipedia.
