FG Inaugurates 17 Member National Addressing System (NAS) C’tte

In a bid to ensure effective and efficient service delivery, the Federal Government has inaugurated a 17 member committee for the National Addressing System (NAS).

The committee which was inaugurated on Thursday in Abuja, is saddled with the responsibility of reviewing addressing apps for compliance with the Nigerian National Addressing Standard &Guidelines; Providing regular update of the NAS Committee activities to the NAS Council and secure approvals whenever necessary, among other expectations.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister of Communication, Barr. Adebayo Shittu, stated that the establishment of a well articulated National Addressing System (NAS), which is simply overdue, is predicated on the importance and role it plays in National Development beyond the primary aim of mail delivery.

While stating that the National Addressing Infrastructure is strategic for National planning and development, Shittu added that a standardized addressing infrastructure and database is indispensable in locating residents of the country.

“A homogeneous and unambiguous addressing resources is an essential tool for effective and efficient service delivery” he said.

He called on stakeholders and all Nigerians to support the National Addressing System Committee Members in the discharge of their duties and adopt standards and guidelines for the implementation of the NAS.

In his words, “Committee members are invited to understand their assigned roles and contribute their quota towards the implementation of a dependable addressing system for Nigeria, which will provide the required ease of access to various locations and people”.

On his part, the Postmaster General, Barr. Adebisi Adegbuyi, stated that the importance of addressing cannot be over emphasized, adding that it is a way of providing and accessing government policies.

He further said that the government will drive the physical digital addressing system.

Giving a brief on the National Addressing System Committee(NASCom), the Director Telecom, and Postal Services, Engr. Ngozi Ogujiofor, noted that the committee is multi-disciplinary, inter-agency, inter-sectoral and made up of critical stakeholders on addressing matters.

She explained that the Committee is charged with; Developing implementation framework for NAS program; Sensitizing and mobilizing all stakeholders to participate; Providing detailed data management guidelines, data access and security conditions among other roles.

You would recall that the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, inaugurated the NAS Council on 21st September 2017 and the Nigerian National Addressing Standard and Guide line document was endorsed for implementation by the NAS Council on 19th October 2017.
