Abuja -Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to assent to the 2010 Electoral Act Amendment, Nigerian Youths from different groups on Wednesday staged a protest demanding for Presidential assent to the #NotTooYoungToRun Bill.
President Muhammadu Buhari who wrote to the National Assembly withholding his assent to the amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act, said the amendments by the lawmakers were in conflict with existing laws.
The protesting Youths took their protest from the Unity Fountain in Abuja early morning and terminated at the entrance of the Presidential Villa where they demanded to be addressed by President Buhari.
They had placards and banners with different inscriptions, some of which read, “Keep your promise Mr.Prsident, say yes to #NotTooYoungToRun Bill”; “Exclusion is Injustice”; “Mr. President Thank You for saying yes” etc.
While waiting to be addressed by the President, the protesters barricaded the villa entrance and expressed displeasure over the President’s action towards the Electorate Amendment Act.
In the course of the wait, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on New Media was sent to address the youths but was rejected as the protesters refused to give an audience, rather they demanded for the President, Secretary-General of the Federation or a Minister to address them.
Also, Participants from People With Disability were part of the #NotTooYoungToRun National Day of Action on Presidential Assent.
Various youth organizations across Nigeria turned up for the #NotTooYoungToRun National Day of Action on Presidential Assent, with a demand to President Muhammdu Buhari to sign the #NotTooYoungToRun bill..
It is worthy of noted that the Youth constitute majority of Nigerian population and Young Nigerians are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the #NotTooYoungToRun Bill to open the space for young Nigerians to run for office.
