The Federal government of Nigeria has named Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo (FUNAI) after the first elected vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme.
The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who made this known on Friday at the Funeral Service of late Dr. Alex Ekwueme in Oko, Anambra state, said that no reward will be sufficient from a grateful nation to one of her best leaders.
Osinbajo further noted that the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme now lives in the heart of the multitude of those he touched and those who cannot repay him.
Late Dr. Alex Ekwueme who was the first elected Vice-President of Nigeria, in office from 1979 to 1983, died on the 19th of November 2017 in London, United Kingdom.
Ekwueme was Born on October 21, 1932 and obtained his primary education at St John’s Anglican Central School Ekwulobia, from where he proceeded to Kings College, Lagos. He became a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Washington in the United States of America where he bagged bachelors and master’s degrees in Architecture, City Planning and Urban Planning.
He also earned degrees in Sociology, History, Philosophy and Law from the University of London and also earned a Ph.D in Architecture from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in the UK.
Late Dr. Alex Ekwueme who died at the age of 85, will be laid to rest today in his home town, Oko Anambra State.
Dignitaries from all works of life graced the funeral occasion, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife Patience Jonathan, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state as well as other top leaders, present and past.
Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo (FUNAI) in Ebonyi State of Nigeria now Alex Ekwueme University was founded on 26th February, 2011.
